Building Denmark’s First On-Farm Green Ammonia Unit

We're thrilled to announce that in December 2024, NitroVolt was awarded an 11.8M DKK (€1.6M) grant from the Danish Agricultural Agency’s Green Development & Demonstration Program (GUDP) for our NitroBox project! This two-year initiative will culminate in the deployment of Denmark’s first on-farm 5 kg/day green ammonia demonstration unit, a major step toward decarbonizing agriculture.

The NitroBox project is powered by a strong, cross-disciplinary consortium:

      - NitroVolt: Project lead and SME, commercializing decentralized NitroBox units.

      - Danish Technological Institute (DTI): Experts in design, engineering, and demonstration unit deployment.

      - University of Southern Denmark (SDU): Specialists in power electronics and energy system integration.

      - SEGES Innovation: Responsible for conducting the full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the NitroBox system.

We’re beyond excited to work with these exceptional partners to make green, on-site fertilizer a reality for Danish farmers.

Project Kick-off Highlights

We kicked off the NitroBox journey in January with a visit to SDU, where the NitroVolt team met with Prof. Thomas Ebel and Assoc. Prof. Ramkrishan Maheshwari. Their cutting-edge 50 kW electrolyzer system and power electronics lab set the stage for future NitroBox development.

Together,we then visited H2 Core Systems in Heide, Germany, an official integrator of Enapter AEM electrolyzers. After reviewing their setup and running a market analysis, we’re confident that the Enapter systems are the right choice for NitroBox.

Later that month, the NitroVolt team visited DTI’s facilities to review equipment needed for scaling up, including the coating machinery essential for producing 400 cm² and 900 cm² flow-cell electrodes, which will be at the heart of our larger stacks.

Tech Progress: Cathodes & Current Densities

On the R&D side, NitroVolt has made solid progress in cathode development. We’ve fabricated high-surface-area copper electrodes and already reached -100 mA/cm² for the cathode, which is two-thirds of our target for the demonstration unit. With ongoing iterations and input from DTI, we’re on track to hit the 150 mA/cm² target by the end of 2025.

What’s Next?

Next quarter is shaping up to be a big one:

      - Our pressurized system will be operational.

      - Testing begins on the 400 cm² Nitrolyzer stack and 900 cm² flow-cell.

      - We’ll attend the NH3 Event in Rotterdam to present NitroBox.

      - First LCA results from SEGES will be ready to share.

We look forward to keeping you updated as we continue to build toward a greener, more resilient agricultural future.

Best regards,
The NitroBox Project Team
